The King of Pop is returning to the world’s stage.
Michael Jackson will soon be on television and on the front of Pepsi cans, again. On Thursday, PepsiCo Inc. announced plans to use his image for the new global marketing campaign, “Live for Now.” The brand has also tapped Nicki Minaj and partnered with Twitter to live stream concerts in an effort to rejuvenate its popularity and market share value.
The campaign will feature a TV ad, special edition cans featuring Michael’s image, and a chance to download remixes to some of our favorite hits. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Bad,” Pepsi will introduce 16-ounce collector’s cans in China and the U.S. with scan codes that allow consumers to download remixed tracks from the album.
The promotion will then spread to two dozen countries in the fall.
This is just another chapter in the relationship between Pepsi and the King. In 1984, Jackson’s hair caught fire while he was filming a commercial for the brand in Los Angeles. He suffered severe scalp burns as a result and Pepsi paid Jackson $1.5 million.
