Grammy Award winning artist Melanie Fiona‘s highly anticipated new album has sadly not lived up to it’s expectation in sales. Even with big names such as Drake, J. Cole, and Nas appearing on the project, it simply wasn’t enough. According to HitsDailyDouble.com, Melanie’s sophomore album, The MF Life‘s first-week sales came in at 31,903 bowing at #7 of the Billboard 200′s top 10. However Melanie’s debut album album, ‘The Bridge’, was not a big sell either as it only sold 4,000 in it’s first week and peaked at #27 on the Billboard 200. To date, the record has sold less that 360K copies in the US, although she did earn a Grammy Award nomination in the 2010 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her breakthrough single, It Kills Me.
So what went wrong? Simply put: promotion. Melanie is a talented artist with The MF Life being a solid R&B album, but her record company has made little effort to push her or her project in the weeks leading up to her release date. Even though Melanie spent all of last week promoting her album on shows such as BET’s 106 & Park and Jay Leno, it simply wasn’t enough gas to jump start her album sales. Even though I’m sure she has more singles to release that can and probably will increase her record sales, but not by much. For now only time will tell if she can surpass her debut album and nab another Grammy Award nomination.
