Fela is one of the most talked about theatre productions, being produced by a few of the most notable celebrity names in the world of entertainment. Talk about a big deal. There have been an assortment of magical broadway musicals over the years; “Cats”, “Rent”, “Phantom Of The Opera”, “Aida”, “Chicago”, “Hairspray” and many, many more. So what makes “Fela” so special?
The play is based on the real life story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose pulsating and prolific Afrobeat rhythms ignited the minds and hearts of a generation. Kuti resisted a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity, pushed to succeed by the inspiration of his mother, a civil rights activist. The play has received rave reviews and critical acclaim during it’s lengthy run on Broadway, and has been heralded by an array of the entertainment word’s elite. Speaking of which, the play is also produced by a group of several entertainment A-List heavyweights; Hollywood actors/producers Will and Jada Pinkett Simth, along with international Hip Hop superstar Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. The play is currently running at the Canon Theatre in Toronto from October 25th to November 6th 2011. For more information and to purchase ticketsvisit: http://mirvish.com/shows/fela
