The movie making geniuses over at Lifetime have decided to remake the timeless movie Steel Magnolias but as an added, brilliant effect they plan to use an all-black cast. I know right? Dream come true! Wait, you mean to tell me you’ve never wondered what a black Shelby would have looked like? Okay… me neither. In fact this is as left field Lifetime has gotten in awhile.
As you may remember the original cast of this 80′s masterpiece were Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Darryl Hannah. The movie was based in Louisiana and followed six women’s journey through life’s struggles, hardships, and hairspray. Steel Magnolias went on to be a huge success and is one of the best “chick flicks” to date [cue "open your eyes Shelby" quote]. Apparently this wasn’t enough for Lifetime, they want to take up another notch and make the women “sistahs”.
The project has not been necissarily green lighted has of yet, however it is on a fast track, with some preliminary work on casting choices for the leads expected to begin soon. You know what else will begin soon, the controversy. I really hope Lifetime handles this with care because one false move and this could turn out to be a real disaster. Yet, I do have to commend Lifetime for recognizing the need for black actresses on television. It is almost embarrassing the lacking presence black actors and actresses have on television right now. With that being said, I do wish they would have presented an entirely original movie [like Lifetime is always doing] and then cast all-black actresses.
Like it or not, looks like this thing will eventually be a “go”, so best of luck to Lifetime and in the words of Ms. RuPaul “Don’t fuck it up!”
