Mrs. Carter once said she wanted her unborn son to be just like her dad, but things took a turn for the worst in 2011 when she abruptly fired her dad/manager of 16 years because of allegations of him stealing money from her. To add insult to injury, Mathew Knowles took a paternity test that proved he fathered an illegitimate child with another woman while he was still married to Bey’s mother, Tina Knowles. Bey briefly spoke about their strained relationship in her documentary Life Is But A Dream. This past March, Mathew made a few remarks to The Sun that caused another rift within the family.

Nicki Minaj

The Trinidadian rapper has been very open about her personal struggles. Nicki says that growing up with a very violent father who was addicted to drugs made her fear for her mother’s life when he would threaten to kill her. “I wanted to kill him. I wished he was dead,” she says of her father, Robert Maraj.

Rihanna

The Rated R singer confessed that her father Ronald Fenty would do drugs and abuse her mom when she was younger in her appearance on The Tyra Banks Show. She also recalled how she would suffer from massive migraines because of the stress her dad caused. There were reports that RiRi was upset about her dad speaking to the media about her tumultuous relationship with Chris Brown after their abusive relationship came to light.

Adele

Adele has experienced heartbreak from many men in her life, including her dad, Mark Evans. Mark admits that his alcoholism caused a rift between he and his daughter. “It’s like I’m dead to her,” he told the UK’s Daily Mail. Adele says she tried to form a relationship with her dad, but things didn’t turn out in her favor. She told Vogue Magazine: “I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him. He’s f**king blown it. He will never hear from me again.” So far, there has been no reconciliation between the two.

Oprah

Even the Queen of Daytime talk couldn’t escape the nasty rumors her father, Vernon Winfrey, disclosed about her being a disobedient child, lying about her molestation claims and having a lesbian relationship with her best friend, Gayle King. Oprah handled the situation with class (as usual) and didn’t feed into the unauthorized biography book being written to expose her.

Katy Perry

Believe it or not, the ‘I Kissed A Girl’ pop star was raised in a very religious household. That would explain why her father, Keith Hudson, claimed that his provocative daughter is “the devils child” during one of his recent sermons. Katy has addressed how hard it was to be raised by her religious family growing up in her 2012 documentary but she didn’t have anything to say about her dad’s blasphemous claims.

Demi Lovato

The X Factor judge has no intentions to make nice with her dad, Patrick Lovato. Patrick pleaded with his daughter to make amends with him before he went into surgery for cancer, but Demi was not ready to talk. Instead, she decided to let out her frustrations with her dad on a song off her album Unbroken entitled ‘For the Love of a Daughter’. In the song, Demi sings “It’s been five years since we’ve spoken last/ And you can’t take back what we never had.”

He credits the 17 years in the entertainment industry as his preparation for his first foray into switching up a client’s image.

Vixen caught up with the stylist-slash-fashion designer as he talks about working with the new face of Myx Fusion, gives tips on how to find the perfect stylist and what celebrities he would love to style. — Sharifa Daniels

VIBE Vixen: How has it been working with Nicki Minaj?
Jerod McClairn: Working with Nicki has been really good. We’re just trying to expand upon her current style and have it evolve and mature but also have it be honest to who she really is at this time.

How did the collaboration actually come about?
Nicki and her previous stylist had parted ways somehow and it was unexpected. I was available and it all went from there.

Did you think it was a lot to take on?
Yeah. I was like, ‘I don’t understand what they’re looking for. My strong suit isn’t really her creative direction for her image, so I wasn’t sure how it was going to pan out. My agent just encouraged me to do what I do and do what you feel is right. That’s what I did and it was well received.

Where do you get your inspiration from to dress her?
As a stylist, when you’re dressing a person, you’re really dressing that person’s personality. Of course dressing Nicki Minaj—the artist—is different from dressing Nicki Minaj for American Idol because it’s two completely different genres and aspects of her career. I use fashion as a tool to do that and I keep in mind the current trends, but it pretty much comes from her.

Do you style her mostly for her videos or public appearances?
I do most of her public stuff. Sometimes, if I’m prepping her job already, she’ll call me with certain request that’ll be just for her regular every day stuff, but I would say, yeah, I do everything.

Dope. What’s the favorite look you’ve done for Nicki thus far?
The color block [Hervé] Léger dress [paired with] Christian Louboutin’s Black/White Watersnake Daf Mary Janes. It’s the epitome of a collaboration between the two of us. It’s a real honest statement as to who she is and where she is right now as an artist.

I”m sure you two disagree on what she’ll wear.
I’m a professional so I’m accustom to working with celebrities. Our job as professionals is to know how to maneuver through. At the end of the day, as long as she’s getting what she needs, you’re not going to have a problem out of her.

VV: Are you big on giving new designers a chance to show their work and have major celebrities wearing it?
JM: It’s important to stay up on the new designers because you always want your client to be cutting edge, trendsetting and ahead of the times. So you have to keep your ears and eyes on the streets.

Outside of Nicki, what do you do?
In addition to styling Nicki, I do a small collection of custom tailored menswear that consist of everything from suits to golf pants and golf shorts. It’s a high-end line of classic menswear with a European sensibility. It’s unique in itself, high quality fabrics, good stitching and attention to detail, but it definitely does have a fashion edge also.

Is that how you want your all clients to look–high-end and classy?
That’s my point of view for my line, but that’s not how I necessarily want every client to look. Being a stylist is about being a visionary. You have to have a vision for each and every client and that vision should be unique and specific to those specific individual. There are a lot of shoppers out there and people fail to realize that fashion is a tool. You have to use it to create something. There are a lot of shoppers and not visionaries out there right now.

What are the key things someone should look for when looking for a stylist?
They should have a website, a portfolio, some tangible source that you can go to and review their body of work. You should be able to see the caliber of the artist from their body of work. Every stylist won’t be a good fit for every client because different clients have different needs and different stylists have different strengths.

You’re familiar with dressing athletes, so which ones are currently nailing their looks?
Kobe Bryant is getting it right. Number one, he’s not trying to hard so it’s coming off more effortlessly, and the execution is on point. Sharp and clean lines, great combination. He’s not following the crowd either. Chris Bosh looks really good too. They would be my two favorites.

You would love to work with them?
I don’t think they really need me but I would love to work with Kobe and Vanessa. There are just different things I see that I would enhance.

What athlete would you want to work to change their look for the better?
Joakim Noah. I would want to cut his hair and put him in something very sleek and slender.

Which celebrity would you want to style next?
Kerry Washington.

Who’s more of a fashionista: Olivia or Kerry?
Olivia Pope. Kerry’s trying to create a separation between her character’s image and her own. She’s a quirky person but there’s a different way of executing it to bring that about.

If you know anything about Nicki Minaj, you know that she’s fearless with her fashion choices. Not afraid to wear colorful wigs and wacky outfits to make a statement, the former American Idol judge is now bringing her vision to K-Mart with her brand new clothing line The Nicki Minaj Collection.

“I definitely didn’t want people to think, ‘Oh well she’s only going to have crazy stuff on her line’ because that would only would push them away,” she says while giving a sneak peak at some of the chic apparel.

The new line, which features more than a few sexy sleek neon leggings and bold animal prints, makes it’s clear that this line still definitely has Nicki Minaj’s signature stamp on it. “Comfortable equals confident. I’m doing this for women in general, to feel beautiful and sexy and any woman can wear it and feel confident.”

Ciara is jump-starting promo for her self-titled LP with an anticipated performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Atlanta singer was spotted arriving at ABC Studios Tuesday night (June 4) to perform “Body Party” in front of a live audience. Decked out in leather pants and lace top, CiCi also turned up for an energetic rendition of “I’m Out,” her second single featuring Nicki Minaj. It’s rumored that the two have already shot a video for the “diss record” with a t0-be-determined release date.

Nicki Minaj might be looking to take more than just Cassie away from Diddy.

The “High School” raptress is making her foray into spirits as the new part owner and face of Myx Fusions, the fruit-infused, single serve moscato wine brand. Chief Marketing Officer Mona Scott-Young explains the brand’s campaign expansion into print, radio, and television — something the rapper is no stranger to.

“The collaboration between Nicki Minaj and Myx Fusions is a game changer,” said Mona Scott-Young. “Nicki is an innovative trendsetter and has the ability to energize the masses. She embodies everything that Myx Fusions represents – style, spontaneity and the desire to push the envelope and inspire change. Both brands are perfectly aligned.”

Historically, the Hot 97′s annual Summer Jam event introduces up-and-comers, welcomes legends and squashing (or breeds) the wildest beefs…and last night was no different.

The hip-hop radio titan celebrated 20 years of music history Sunday night (June 2) at MetLife Stadium. Hip-hop legends like Lil Kim performed a set the same as she did almost 20 years ago, while rising icon Nicki Minaj made her anticipated return. Rain and shine, the show still went on, with several surprise guests and celebs rocking with the 55,000+ fans in attendance.

Outside of wigs and lipstick, it’s hard to imagine that diva Barb Nicki Minaj has a favorite anything. But during her sitdown on Tuesday (May 28) with Hot 97′s Peter Rosenberg, the “High School” MC rattled off her fave femcees, including known enemy Lil Kim.

“My favorite: Foxy, Kim, Lauryn and then Remy,” she told the morning show hosts. “When Remy came out I was very excited about her. But with Foxy, Kim and Remy, they were all from New York too. No disrespect to any other female rappers, but those were the ones that I felt like I could get into that. They sounded like me when I spoke. I just thought they really made an impact.”

She sprinkled love for the fun-loving ladies, too. “I always love Missy because she was playful. Missy and Left Eye, they weren’t afraid to me goofy at times, and I loved that.”

Remember the days of “Ladies Night”? Maybe, just maybe, Nicki could round up these lyrically-inclined vets and get back to that.

Nicki Minaj may have kept it low-key while on the set of The Other Woman, currently filming in New York City, but her wigs were front and center. The rapper began filming with a straight wig, but later on the hip-hop star opted for a blonde curly and straight wig.

Minaj tweeted to her 16.5 million followers: ‘Lmao. Yall r so silly. In the makeup chair now. Getting ready for the next scene. Aaaaahhhh!!!!!’
