Vixen V-Day
by: Sacha Phillip | Feb. 14, 2007
Of all the "Hallmark Holidays", none inspire the operatic frenzy of anticipation, disappointment, desire and bitterness like Valentine's Day.
Its all-inclusive beauty and unabashed fun evaporates post-Kindergarten, and the marketers of modern love hold our romantic imaginations captive. Candy-grams and cupcakes have been replaced with materialism and anxiety and it’s only getting worse. This year, Vixens, join us in taking back V-Day, by spreading the love–without pressure (or great expense).
Our recommendations:
Send out a stack of pocket valentines to your friends. Get creative with construction paper and doilies or pick up the classic, store-bought Hello Kitty and Scooby Doo card sets. You'll have your buddies cheesing all day!
Adorn your home with fresh flowers. Don't succumb to florists' romantic racketeering–make your own bouquet with beautiful buds from the grocery or corner bodega. Don't worry if you don't have vases—funk up your floral arrangement by displaying it in anything from a small bowl to a corona bottle.
Write and “snail mail” a heartfelt letter to someone you hold dear, but haven't seen or heard from in a while.
Throw an intimate fete for your friends and don’t discriminate—single, coupled, invite them all. On the menu: pizza and pastries (a nod to classroom fiestas past) and wine. To really indulge, serve your guests rosé champagne - after all, we all need a little effervescence in our lives!
Toss every pair of misshapen, old, frumpy underwear (yes, even those reserved for "that time of the month"). Going forward, clad your backside beautifully. Every day.
Commit to something you care deeply about: a cause, a hobby, a goal, whatever. Passion and romance are not mutually exclusive.
Be a secret admirer. Send a tiny token and a sweet, anonymous note to someone you think the world of, to let him or her know how wonderful he or she is.
Remember: single and alone are not the same things. Think of all the love in your life every day and allow it to fill your heart. Don't fear–it's a flexible organ and will always make room for true love.
