In With The Old

In addition to the myriad responsibilities a Vixen has in her everyday life, now we’ve got to add environmental responsibility to the list.

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” must become our collective mantra if we want to remain cool with our girl, Mother Earth. Most of us recycle and a lot of us try to reduce, but reuse is still viewed with hesitation by many–and I can admit, there are a lot of things that should never, ever be used more than once. That aside, believe it or not, reuse is the most fun and the most style-friendly of the three. Save some soon-to-be castoffs from the landfill by getting creative and, ultimately, accentuating your home!

The casing of a burned-down “couture” candle makes a perfect vase! Scrape the remaining wax from the bottom of the glass (or metal) jar and you’ll have an anything but run-of-the-mill means to display flowers. In fact, you’ll be at the forefront of floral fashion, because short, voluminous bouquets (with hidden stems) are hot right now.

A teacup and saucer that, though quite lovely, may not suit your lifestyle or may be the sole survivor of a shattered set, need not be trashed just yet. Use the delicate porcelain pair as an earring organizer. Hang your danglers on the cup’s lip, to keep them untangled, and put your posts on the saucer’s rim. Talk about seriously sparkling! As an added bonus, with your earrings easily in view, your daily accessorizing routine will be accelerated considerably.

Don’t know what to do with your magazine archive? Transform it into coffee table (or a pair of side tables) by stacking your glossies (but make sure that they are sturdy). Top the pile with an antique mirror of appropriate size (remember, the theme is reuse) to act as a tabletop.

Imagine the possibilities. The next time you’re poised over your garbage can, with a seemingly useless object in your hands – think twice. Yesterday’s jam jar is tomorrow’s wine glass.
