Last week in Atlanta, Ne-Yo held a very intimate and early listening session for his forthcoming album The Cracks in Mr. Perfect set to be released in early 2012. He announced that the album wasn’t finished but played 7 tracks for us so that we could get a feel of the direction he is going in. It was refreshing to hear that he has went back to the basics. Classic R&B. The music that first made us fall in love with his sound back in 2006 when he dropped his debut album, In My Own Words.
He didn’t play the current lead single “The Way You Move” featuring Trey Songz and T-Pain (which I feel he should remix and take T-Pain off and add Chris Brown) nor did he announce any of the songs he did play with track names. He just let the music play and everyone grooved, so I took it upon myself to name the tracks that stood out to me for the purpose of this post myself.
“That’s My Other Gun” – My favorite of the tracks played. An unconventional analogy to the typical ride or die chick scenario. Ne-Yo compares his lady to a gun, locked and loaded and ready for everything. The entire time I kept hearing a reggae remix to this joint. Would definitely take it to the next level.
“Lazy Love” – I didn’t know a man being lazy in bed could sound so sexy but Ne-Yo pulled it off. The track that references a girl wrapping her legs around him so good that it makes him fall into a lazy love and not wanting to do anything.
“Slow Down” – Ne-Yo is known for having a couple bedroom joints but this isn’t one. Here slowing down is a dope ballad about taking your time in a relationship.
“Should it Be You” – Ne-Yo is reminiscing about that past lover that he thinks he should with be right now. I like the record even though the track seemed recycled but I couldn’t put my finger on where I had heard it before.
For the most part he stuck to traditional R&B, although something in him is still holding onto that dance music sound that I like to call “glowstick” music that he has been most known for recently.”Rocking Away” was that type of track that just didn’t work for me with Ne-Yo’s voice but I could hear the potential in the song. It was a push back to haters so I felt it would be perfect for Justin Beiber with all the paternity issues he has going on right now. I could also hear Katy Perry making this song a big hit.
Overall it was a great event sponsored by Porsche and I’m looking forward to hearing the finished product especially since he’s already worked with the likes of Stargate, The Underdogs, NO I.D, Timbaland, and Red-One on this album.
Many artists and celebrities were in town for the taping of the 2011 Soul Train Awards and came out to support. Below Keri Hilson is pictured with Compound Entertainment artist RaVaughn.
Definitely be on the look out for Ne-Yo’s new artist next year. I got to check out some of her records a couple weeks ago and she can blow! Common, Miguel, Real Housewives of Atlanta cast members Peter and Cynthia Bailey and more were also in attendance to hear Ne-Yo’s new tunes. Check out photos from the event below.
