Skinny, skinny, skinny! It’s everywhere!

From the fashion press heralding the return of the legging, to the celebrity rags (backhandedly, but absolutely) lauding starlets’ shrinking silhouettes, to the big-city streets, teeming with “hipsters” stuffed into their cigarette-legged jeans. The thing is, though – while you can never be too rich, you (and your pants) can be too thin. The skinny-pant look is decidedly not for everyone. Style-conscious women want to update their trouser wardrobes, without the threat of “camel toe”. We want to venture to the flip side of the skinny trend. We want volume.

The skinny pant appears to be on its way to overtaking the low-waisted boot-cuts that have ruled the streets, and the stores, since Alexander McQueen first showed his “bumsters” in the late-1990s. Still, we would venture that it’s the full-legged trouser that will be the real pant story of the current decade — and that its versatility will push its relevance into the next.

The modern trouser is available in a variety of widths, for a variety of style-sensibilities. Ladies who prefer a slim cut, but aren’t looking for a skin-tight look, will love straight-legged pants à la a “dandy’s” suit pant. Nowadays, however, these slim slacks are cut to move, rippling gently down the leg. Those seeking a more generous cut should try sailor pant-inspired styles (flat-fronted, wide legged trousers with a bit of a flare) or the new generation of palazzo pants. Cut from lightweight fabrics, the sophisticated palazzo pant is perfect for anyone desiring to make a statement, whether in the conference room or over cocktails! Women who are wild for even more width can now push the limits, as designers are cutting trousers ever wider – this look isn’t just for skater boys anymore!
