E-Z Wider
by: Sacha Phillip | May. 30, 2007
Regardless of the inherent rigidity of the fabric, the new wide-legs are viscous, voluminous, fluid.
The effect of the new trousers is similar to that of their luxurious sartorial forbearers - think of glamorous silver-screen stars, swanning across the screen in the 1930s, conjure disco-era divas lounging seductively at Studio 54 in the 1970s – but these new incarnations are purely 21st century. Waistlines are higher than those of the how-low-can-you-go-rise pants that have been so popular of late, but remain lower than in decades past (fear not, you won’t be buttoning your pants just shy of your bust line).
The hems of the new wider-width trousers tend to pool ethereally or are cut crisply across at the floor. The effect is dramatic, as the legs and the shoes are hidden from view – both subtly, seductively exposed only by the wearer’s stride (or strut).
Prefer the “Puss ‘n Boots” look of pants tucked into knee-length boots, but didn’t think you could pull it off without shimmying into a pair of second-skin jeans? The answer? Tuck your new fluid finds into your favorite pair of high boots and “fluff” them out slightly where the boot begins – the look? A modern, American take on “bombachas” and boots – traditional Argentine (horse) riding attire.
So you see – it is possible to stay true to your personal style while keeping up with the trends. Perhaps you’ll even be moving ahead of them.
