Dark and Glow-y

I have a really bad addiction to body bronzers. I'm always mixing, pouring and slathering just to get the right "glow." There's the walking down the streets of DC glow, then there is the "hanging out in Miami" glow, then there is "I've been doing yoga four times a week and I feel strong" glow. All my glows have one thing in common - moisture. I love applying loose bronzer powder from broken kits with baby oil to get a glow, but I'm not above mixing Monoi oil with a shimmer lotion to create the perfect glow.

A key to getting the bronzer right for your skin is to apply sparingly then back away from the mirror and then check. If you apply too much, then you are orange, not enough and you won't have that "I've been away on vacay" look. First start with exfoliating the skin and apply a fragrance free lotion. And don't forget to add sunscreen if you will be in the sun. Sunscreen is very important. Most of these have fragrance and you don't want to mix too many scents.

Here are my suggestions to be dark and glow-y for the summer.

Sephora's Super Sheen Bronzing Mist - I recently brought this with me to Miami. My cousin who usually isn't into bronzers saw my skin and said "spray me." I need this in my life. I also poured part in a small spray bottle and mixed with water and voila, a yummy smelling oil sheen. If you hair is long spray it on a brush and put through your hair.

Nars Body Glow - Nars is a pioneer of high pigment color. This Body Glow is a cult favorite with Tahitian Monoi oil that is so good for the skin.

Scott Barnes Body Bling - This is the granddady of body bronzers. Scott created this for Jennifer Lopez to give her skin that radiant glow.

Sue Devitt Liquid Gold Coast Bronzing Glow - Sue is Australian and knows a thing or too about being golden. I've got two words for you: Bondi Beach. This is where Sue came up with the idea for her product.

Guerlain Terracotta Teinte Dore - Guerlain has been making bronzers for the face for years. Even in the late 80s and early 90s they had the Terracotta bronzers. They have never stopped believing that a woman looks better with a glow. This is made for the body, but a little mixed with a tinted moisturizer for the face will work too.

I like to call this my "shimmy shimmy cocoa puff" glow. I hope these help you get your own glow and your skin glows like a candle in the wind.

Moisture Does a Body Good

I sincerely apologize for just now posting. Between the "job that pays the bills" and everything else, I've been really swamped. But I'm back and hopefully a lot more organized to bring the best post of getting your skin summer soft. Previously, I focused on body scrubs and now it's time to add the moisture. Since summer is vastly approaching I'm going to give the body butters a rest. I realize some people may not want to be greasy for the summer, but want to glow, glow, glow.

I also spritz baby oil all over after showering. I then put on a big fluffy robe to soak it all in. This locks in moisture and will make your skin super soft, supple, and glowing. After that I apply lotion and voila, moisturized skin.

Nivea Essentially Enriched Lotion. I have been using this lotion since I was a child. It's still holds up. If it's too heavy for your body, they have the lighter conditioning oil which is wonderful too.

Kiehl's Creme de Corps Light Weight Body Lotion. I love the heavy one in the winter time, but in the summer, you want to rub and run. This is such a luxurious lotion and a little goes a long way. There is not an overpowering scent, so you can spritz your favorite perfume and go.

Burt's Bees Naturally Nurturing Milk & Honey Body Lotion. Burt's Bees is an all natural bath and body line that has more products than just this lotion. But since I'm listing moisture products I couldn't without this lotion. I picked it up on a trip to Whole Foods and I was glad that I did. Since I go through lotion as quick as a glass of water, I'm currently rotating different products. This is always in the beauty rotation.

I have a deep love for Bobbi's makeup. When she created the scent years ago, I was immediately hooked. Not only is it moisturizing, but it has such a light and fragrant scent that you don't need to add perfume. I call it my "grocery shopping scent." It's light enough to wear out when you don't want to use perfume. It comes in perfume form, but trust me all you really need is the lotion.

Once you get your skin soft, then you could add a shimmer glow if skin is going to be shown. The next post will be on products that give me a "shimmer fever."

Ready to Get Skin-Sational

Tomorrow is officially the first day of spring and for me that means allergies. It also means that I need to start prepping my skin to be summer ready and beautimous. I don’t mean skincare for my face, but scrubs and moisturizers that does a body good. In the winter time, I don’t use salt scrubs of any kind. I believe they beat up the skin, take out any type of moisture, and turns your skin into an ashy, dry, and cracked mess in need of pampering. Oh, but once spring starts, it is time for a change which means scrubbing my body beautiful. Here are the top five scrubs I will rubbing on in the coming weeks.

1. Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Sea Salt Body Scrub. You’ve seen the ads, but didn’t know if you wanted to try the product. I love this deliciously scented scrub. It leaves my body soft, supple, and with a divine yummy scent. I suggest a follow up with the entire Almond Cookie line, but that’s my favorite.

2. Bliss Super Slough Scrub. Bliss has been a leader in body products. This Super Slough Scrub is great because the granules are smaller than most and it foams. Most scrubs are meant to well, scrub. If you are a lather junkie like myself, mix it with a shower gel and a get a 2-for-1 deal if you are a in rush.

3. Kiehl’s Ultra Moisturizing Buffing Cream with Scrub Particles. This is a deliciously thick and whipped scrub. The one problem, if you tend to be heavy handed you can dip this entire container in three uses. I advise slowing down and enjoying the scrub process. You will be glad you did because there will be more going around for the next exfoliation.

4. Caribbean Therapy Body Scrub. If you are in a need of a vacation, but the only place you go to is the island in your mind, I suggest this scrub to help you get there.

5. Brown Sugar With a Shower Gel. This is the body scrub you make courtesy of your grocery store. Take a hand full of brown sugar and mix into your shower gel. Does this work? Absolutely! I’ve been known to add a little raw oatmeal and olive oil, as well as, for a once a week total body exfoliation.

Remember to add moisture back to your body at the end of the “scrub cycle” and check back for details on the moisturizers I will be using to anoint my body.

Own Your Pretty

I am adding some new information to my very first post. I was born in Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. My entire being is a Southern girl. I have never met a monogram or a thank you card that I didn't like. I am big believer in Southern hospitality. I'm also the only girl of four older brothers. I am my father's ONLY daughter, so I grew up knowing first hand how to be spoiled and spoil myself. I'm big on spoiling myself. I'm grateful and thankful everyday for my life. It's not always "rainbows and butterflies," but it's good. I adore fashion, love looking at the shows, wondering what I will be wearing each season, but for me it's about beauty. I see beauty in everything from books, food, culture, art, music, and life.

I have a life long love affair with beauty products that I inherited from my grandmother. I will try any type of beauty product once. For me there are no bad beauty products, there are only products that don't work on everyone. So, come along with me on the beauty roller caster that is All About the Pretty.

Original Entry:

It is finally cold here in the nation's capitol. After weeks of warm temperatures, old lady winter has decided to show her face. My skincare routine of eye cream, serums, and heavy moisturizer has my skin flawless despite the drastic weather changes of the past few weeks. Winter has not stopped my makeup routine from heading in the direction of spring.

My thoughts are flowers, such as violets, peonies, roses, lilies. In the beauty area, that’s Bobbi Brown’s Violet Palette, NARS Cosmetics Sugarland Eyeshadow in Sparkling Apricot and Gilded Orchid Pink, CARGO Lip Gloss Quad in North Pole which has four shimmering colors in pink, rose, golden ruby and gold. I’m still using some of my fall cosmetics, but lately my spring purchases are appearing on my face.

My first fragrance choice for spring is Lavanila Laboratories Vanilla Blossom. Lavanila is specializing is creating dazzling scents based on vanilla. I’m also adding the new Vera Wang Truly Pink, Calvin Klein Euphoria Blossom, Givenchy Lovely Prism, and another bottle of With Love by Hillary Duff, which is my third bottle in six months, to finish my spring beauty look.
