It’s no secret that women will try bizarre things in the name of beauty. It’s in our nature to want to do whatever we can to look our best—even if it’s a tad embarrassing. Well, what about bird poop? Would you smear that all over your face? Before you say no, let me clarify.

The proper name for the treatment is The Geisha Facial and it is currently only found at New York’s Shizuka New York Day Spa. The facial was conceived in November 2007 by New York facialist Shizuka Bernstein, who was inspired by her mother who often told stories of geisha girls who removed their thick white lead make-up. The procedure, features UV-disinfected nightingale poop that’s air-lifted from the Japanese island of Kyushu. The excrement is mixed with rice bran (to mask the scent) and water, and is then applied as a facemask after drying under UV lights.

“The bird poop facial works because of an enzyme that breaks down the dead skin on the upper layers of the face,” said Bernstein. Apparently the mixture acts as an exfoliate that leaves the customer feeling refreshed.
