We now live in an age where, at the click of a button, we can literally change our lives for better or for worse. We no longer have to sit on the sidelines waiting to be found or acknowledged. All the tools have been provided, from Facebook to Twitter, there is something for everybody, and depending on your strategy, you will successfully achieve your goal of online domination. But what if your appetite for recognition and appreciation turns into an unplanned catastrophe?

There is no doubt that after you ponder the resources at our disposal, we are at the right place at the right time. You can literally garner an army of admirers in less than ten minutes, or reconnect with a long lost pal the very next day. You can turn an ordinary idea into a successful business venture overnight, and even finding your dream job can happen with the right amount of tweeting power.

But you can also lose your best friend, watch your career disappear without a trace, or be accused of shameless betrayal, all because of the fact that you made that life altering decision: YOU CLICKED WITHOUT CHECKING.

I personally have fallen victim to unsuccessfully juggling my social network cubes, and the end result has proven devastating in some cases. I have twittered without realizing I was sending it to three other people and of course that didn’t turn out well. I have gotten messages posted on my Facebook wall that implicated me, and ultimately put me in a position where I had to be accountable, to my friends and even family members. So, I know how it goes.

But don’t get it twisted! I love the fact that I can almost immediately share my excitement about something with a mere tweet, or wish my friend in London a happy birthday instantly via Facebook. But there is the danger of conveying the wrong message or emotion using these network tools, and sometimes the damage can be irrevocable.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having these incredible options at our disposal. We all hope that the good outweighs the bad and that we can understand that there is a line that can’t be crossed and hopefully we wont cross it and continue to protect those relationships that are precious to us.

With any luck we can minimize the “oops” factor and be more victorious in the “phew” category.

Check it before you Click it!

Forbes just released a list of the top earning women in Hollywood and again black actresses are nowhere to be found. The usual names made the cut with a sprinkle of some new faces: Kristen Stewart ($34.5 million), Cameron Diaz ($34 million), Sandra Bullock ($25 million), Angelina Jolie ($20 million), Charlize Theron ($18 million) and so on…

This is a topic that has been dissected to pieces and every time it’s resurrected the end result is always the same. But here is another spin on this; perhaps black actresses need to be involved in more mainstream roles in order to increase their earning potential.

For that to happen, they have to possess a universal appeal that will make them more viable and visually accessible to the Hollywood honchos. That’s where we encounter the formidable roadblock. Not many actresses of color are able to convincingly increase their bankability and permanently add their names to the VIP rolodex.

Veterans like Angela Bassett, Taraji P. Henson and Halle Berry to name a few were not able to completely crack the code, and the younger ones coming up–with the exception of Zoe Saldana who has shown some promise–may have a chance if they end up signing their lives away to star in a five-year franchise. But those are usually based on characters that don’t have much accommodation for actors of color because the writers are almost always Caucasian.

So that brings us to back to the familiar place where we realize that in order for black actresses to earn the kind of money their counterparts command, they have to garner the same level of respect. This is necessary in order to guarantee that they will be considered for the kinds of roles that don’t have anything to do with their race, but rather with their undisputed talent and fluidity.

Even with all those elements in place, the powers that be are supremely rigid. So, until the game plan changes drastically, the players will remain firmly in place.

You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The issue of hair is a never ending story for black women and just when you think you have [...]

You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The issue of hair is a never ending story for black women and just when you think you have found the formula that works, your hair rebels and forces you to get back on the trail of discovery. Bald spots, scanty sides, and obvious thinning are all signs that your tresses are stressed and need some major TLC. Even celebs like Serena Williams and model Naomi Campbell can’t escape the brutal consequences of sticking to weaves through thick and thin. The more money you have at your disposal the easier it is to get caught in the web of weaves and entanglements. There is a method to the madness and you can eat your cake and have it too you just have to be aware of the lines that can’t be crossed and be aware that extensions are simply accessories and not meant to replace your actual hair.

Here is the 101 guide to nursing your crown glory back to health and re-claiming what is rightfully yours.

Step 1

The most important weapon against breakage is to recognize the first signs of deterioration. You can always tell when your hair is crying out for help and your response time is key to keeping your tresses intact. Too much of anything is bad news so even though you convince yourself that weaves help “protect” your hair from potential damaging from the aggressive styling routines, you also have to allow your hair to breathe form all that pressure of being continuously buried for extended periods of time. Taking mini-breaks and soaking your hair in conditioning products that aim to revive and restore your hair’s natural oils and moisture is the best way to allow your hair some breathing space. This gives you the opportunity to pamper your scalp and encourage new growth while also ridding yourself of the accumulated dead hair. Getting a trim doesn’t always do the trick. You have to show love to the hair that is left so that it can blossom and grow without any threatening forces around it.

Jane Carter products are key to hair survival. Two months of constantly inputting the Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner ($13.00) and the Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner ($9.00) will do wonders and make you believe in your ability to enjoy your won hair again.

Step 2

Every living thing needs nourishment, but too often we forget that our tresses fall into that category and so they go without for extended periods of time. Fortunately no matter what stage your hair is in, it can survive if you promptly administer the Hair Nourishing Cream ($22.00) daily and once every couple of weeks you can mix it in with a few drops of the Hair Nourishing Serum ($20.00). This tag team collaboration produces results that are lasting and effective and will prepare your hair for any altering style of your choice.

There are a range of choices featured in this product line that more than live up to the hype. You can visit www.janecartersolution.com to choose accordingly.

During your time of rest and release, you can tame your mane by using the styling tools from Hair Rules. They absolutely wont disappoint. From the Kinky Curling Cream ($24.99) to the Wavy Mousse ($21.00), honoring your hair’s natural state will be a gratifying experience once you experience the full effect of these goodies.

Bottom-line is that our hair needs to be exposed from time to time in order to encourage and promote growth and overall health. With the right products and patience, it doesn’t have to be a struggle to achieve this. So step out of that rigid comfort zone and let your hair down!

A very good friend of mine in her early thirties should probably be thinking about settling down according to the social mores that some of us internalize. But she is simply not ready to commit to anything serious and this could be due to the fact that the men she has had serious relationships have in some way let her down and of course an absentee father doesn’t help matters. But she is confidently sexy, intelligent, charming and witty and has a challenging time fighting off the guys that flock to her side when we hit the hotspots. She enjoys the idea of wading freely in the dating pool without swimming the home stretch and tries to make that known to the men she spends her time with. But sometimes the waters can get murky and we all know how the male species act up when they are not getting their way.

My girlfriend this past summer decided she probably needed to try to give a certain guy a chance that she felt could be a real “potential”. They managed to hang on for about four months and then the tired routine and uninspired weekends gave way to restlessness and my friend was ready for hunting season again. Much to the chagrin of her jilted lover, she posted a pic of her and her much younger HOT stud having the time of their lives on Facebook. All of a sudden the die was cast and all the men she had “broken bread” with were in an uproar. The messages ranged from mildly insulting to downright attack mode. But the real disturbing element to all of this was the reference to the derogatory term “hoe”. She received a number of text messages from a couple of scorned men from her past including her not so dated conquest labeling her a “hoe” for taking them for a ride by pretending to be unattached while all the while she was having a fling with a sexy younger man.

It’s interesting that women who do the exact same thing their male counterparts do on a smaller scale are instantly seen as loose and uncontrollable. Needless to say she was hurt and appalled but not surprised.

It figures that when women don’t conform to the qualities associated with being a dutiful and faithful girlfriend they are instantly dismissed as whores but guys seem to be able to have all the fun they want and there is no term insulting enough to make them cower.

How do you feel about this nagging double standard?

Being a single gal definitely has its advantages. Nobody to answer to when you return home at an unreligious hour, and you can play the dating game like a pro without any consequences. But at some point that nagging voice inside of us gets uncomfortably louder as the months go by and we realize that maybe our certified solitude is keeping us from an endearing partnership with the man of our dreams.

Old habits die hard but sometimes a re-shuffling of the mind is just what the doctor ordered instead of remaining barricaded behind a fence of restrictions.

Being exceptionally idealistic can hinder your chances of embracing potential suitors. Step out of your comfort zone and be open to new experiences and don’t be too quick to judge. You never know until you try. You might be pleasantly swept off your feet.

Increasing your social circle is something that a lot of us are reluctant to do but it can open up a whole new word that is waiting to be discovered. Its so easy to just rely on our staple rolodex of contacts, but sometimes you maybe poised for that ultimate “Cinderella” moment if you involve yourself in activities that guarantee alignment with groups that you may not have necessarily considered if not for that adventurous spirit.

A positive outlook can do wonders when it comes to increasing your chances of transitioning from singledom to coupledom. A lot of us have a dismal forecast when it comes to the future of our love life and we end up being the ones who pay the ultimate price. Believe it or not there are men out there who are “on call” to stand and deliver. Don’t give into the tired stereotypes, and expand your range to include a nice collage of possibilities.

You deserve to be paired with your one and only and sometimes the idea of that seems fantastical but in reality you have the power to orchestrate your fairy tale ending.

She is barely a week old and she already has a hit on her hands. “Glory” the inspirational and touching song that her father dedicated to her debuted at No. 74 on the Hip-Hop chart.

The track features Baby Blue showing off her cooing skills and also doing what babies do best –crying. All her hard work paid off because she is now the youngest credited (B.I.C) person on a Billboard chart.

This is apparently the first hit making newborn. Aisha, Stevie Wonder’s baby daughter also partnered with her father to produce “Lovely”, but she received no official credit for it.

Let’s hope they will allow Blue Ivy a little time to chill before another collabo!

How is it fair that at almost 42 years old she is still as fierce as she was two decades ago?

Robert Cavalli definitely knows how to celebrate when models were superheroes–invincible and undefeated. His latest spring ad showcases the right mix of specimen that is pretty rare nowadays.

Naomi Campbell, Karen Elson and Kristen McMenamy are luminescent as they display their inherent ability to grab our attention, whether we give in or not. The lucky youngster tossed in the mix is 17-year old ingénue, Daphen Groenevald. Fresh off her Miu Miu 2010 ad debut, she will undoubtedly benefit from this immense exposure.

It’s re-assuring to see Campbell maintain her FABULOUSNESS without any hint of her throwing in the towel. No matter how bright the other gals glitter, Campbell is still the brightest of them all!

The native New Yorker who hustled her way into an industry that very few succeed in is finding herself in an elbow lock when it comes to the way she is being portrayed on the show.

The on-again, off-again manager of rapper Jim Jones, doesn’t seem to enjoy being labeled the instigator of all the chaos lighting up the season.

She opens up to YBF about how certain scenes were set up by the producers who were no doubt hoping to make the sparks fly by using her as a catalyst. The Kimbella and Eric Mena fiasco was a typical example of the “staged maneuver” that so many reality shows implement to get viewers coming back for more.

But surely the reality TV starlet had some idea what she was walking into before she signed on the dotted lines and agreed to face the cameras head on. Judging from her show business background, which has allowed her access to major contacts in the industry, it’s hard to believe that she thought reality shows were actually based on reality.

One has to wonder what she hopes to gain by exposing the behind-the-scenes exploits of a show that is ultimately giving her time in the spotlight. Perhaps she feels the need to clear her name and refute the rumors but maybe with time she will realize that nobody cares. She should apply that energy to trying to land her own show. That’s how the reality game is played and won.
