Maya Peterson was the first black female student body president at her school but, after posting an Instagram picture mocking her rich white male classmates she was forced to resign.
Peterson just graduated from the prestigious Lawerenceville school near Princeton, NJ where tuition cost $53K— making it the most expensive high school in the US.
In her photo, the 17-year-old dressed in what she depicted as a typical rich and white “Lawerenceville boi” and added hashtags like #romney2016, #confederate and #peakedinhighschool
Peterson told Buzzfeed that she only posted the pic after her white classmates complained to school officials about a photo of black students making the black power salute in the school’s year book.
One student commented on Peterson’s post saying that as the student president she should not make a mockery of a large group of the school’s population. In response she said, “Yes, I am making a mockery of the right-wing, confederate-flag hanging, openly misogynistic Lawrentians,” Peterson responded. “If that’s a large portion of the school’s male population, then I think the issue is not with my bringing attention to it in a lighthearted way, but rather why no one has brought attention to it before…”
“I understand why I hurt people’s feelings, but I didn’t become president to make sure rich white guys had more representation on campus. Let’s be honest. They’re not the ones that feel uncomfortable here,” she told Buzzfeed.
Unfortunately, Peterson was forced to resign by school officials in order to avoid disciplinary actions.
