Vixen Vent: Can Women in Hip-Hop Just Get Along?

Nicki Minaj Waves

The internet is abuzz about Nicki Minaj‘s speech last night at the 2014 BET Awards and many are speculating that she took a jab at Iggy Azalea. Although we don’t know for sure, it isn’t too far fetched of an assumption since female hip-hop artists are historically known for being pitted against each other. Hopefully this isn’t the case because they are both pretty cool rappers and there is enough room for everyone.

From the famous feud between Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown to the one between Azealia Banks and Iggy, it seems as though there is never unity between female emcees. Hip-hop is a competitive culture by nature but let’s be real, there is typically only one reigning femcee that shines at a time and everyone else fades into the background. Anyone else who dares try to co-exist while another is doing her thing is bound to be torn down. What gives?

Not to sound like someone who is obsessed with the past, but I yearn for the days when multiple female rappers spit some mean bars on tracks together like “Not Tonight (Remix)” in 1998. I still remember dancing around my living room watching my favorite artists splashing champagne, smiling, rapping and just having fun. I dare Nicki, Azealia, Iggy and all the other talented female rappers of our era to do the same. It would be a great moment in hip-hop history and a perfect example for future generations of femcees to come.
