Earlier this week, news hit that Disney star Zendaya was chosen to portray the late singer Aaliyah in her upcoming Lifetime network biopic. Unfortunately, her family has not had anything to do with this choice or the negotiations regarding the film.
TMZ reports that Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager, Barry Hankerson, claims that no one from the Lifetime network has contacted the family about the movie. He also said that the family will make sure they cannot not use any of her music for the flick and plans to hire a lawyer to do everything they can to stop the film from being released. The family is reportedly not opposed to a biographical piece being on the big screen, but thinks Aaliyah was too big of a star to have her life portrayed in a TV movie.
This is not the first time Lifetime has received backlash from a late celebrity’s family about a biopic. Whitney Houston’s family also plans to take legal action to stop her biographical film from going into production.
