M.I.A. might want to think twice before flipping off millions of viewers during a major sporting event. This week, the NFL slapped the unconventional artist with a $16.6 million lawsuit for her 2012 Super Bowl Halftime middle finger ending.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the league has been working for over 2 years to punish the former Roc Nation signee for her “flagrant disregard for the values that form the cornerstone of the NFL brand and the Super Bowl.” They are asking for $1.5 mil for breaching her pre-show contract to upkeep the league’s “reputation for wholesomeness” and $15.1 mil for restitution on the value of her appearance. Apparently, advertisers would have paid that equivalent if she never performed with Madonna and Nicki Minaj.
Matangi’s lawyers shot back with their own defense against the credibility of the sport show’s wholesomeness with its past performances from Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince.
“The continued pursuit of this proceeding is transparently an exercise by NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge NFL.”
While a resolution seems implausible , the pop singer also tweeted Madonna asking for money and court documents.
If we knew our middle finger was worth that much, we’d think twice about ever using it. Flip the page to see M.I.A.’s Twitter response.
