Oprah Winfrey is about to shake up Broadway. According to The New York Times, the media titan is negotiating a deal to star in the popular B’way play Night, Mother in the 2015-2016 season.
Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe will be directing the revamped play that was originally created in 1983 by Marsha Norman. If the OWN owner says yes to the gig, Winfrey will play the starring role as a worried mother whose tries everything she can in order to prevent her troubled daughter from committing suicide.
“Oprah has had a longstanding desire to act on Broadway,” Scott Sanders, lead producer of the project, told NYT. “She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress.”
Just last year, O, who has already been nominated for Oscars for her work in 12 Years A Slave and The Color Purple, told The New York Daily News, “Broadway is definitely in my future.”
