We know Lupita Nyong’o is a fashion killa, but is there more than meets the eye?! Of course there is! The Academy Award nominee is the face of New York Magazine‘s “Spring Fashion” issue and inside, she’s shedding light on what she calls a “suburban” upbringing.
“It felt very normal to me, but ‘normal’ to me might be very different from ‘normal’ to you. I don’t know what ‘normal’ is,” says the Kenyan beauty of life in Mexico (her family moved there after her brother went missing in their home country). “Soccer, hockey, rounders, netball, touch rugby—they could do without me, to put it mildly…loved watching tv- Step by Step, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, Full House—I watched a lot of sitcoms, as you can tell.”
The cover girl would eventually study abroad in America. Although she was initially apprehensive about pursuing an acting career, she knew it was the best place to be. And today, she’s getting a taste of stardom with the intrusive paparazzi.
“I don’t know who they were waiting for, but they definitely chased me down, which is a startling, disturbing experience. I did not expect it. I went into flight mode.[...]There are so many highlights that are no longer highlights. I’m living a very swollen life. I’ve been in a bubble. I haven’t been out much. I haven’t gotten used to being recognized.” More than that, “I was blissfully ignorant of the magnitude of the project I was in or what it was going to mean for the world.”
Fun fact: Lupita credits a gluten-free diet for her flawless figure. Love it!
