Piracy was a major topic last year, from Beyonce’s self-titled album being copied 240,000 times to more recently Rihanna and Bruno Mars topping off the list of the most illegally downloaded artists of 2013, tallying more than five million downloads each, Rolling Stone reports.
Musicmetric executive, Gregory Mead said to Rolling Stone, “Back in the day, people went into the record shops to try records before they bought them. Nowadays, they download or stream a track and then perhaps buy a download or a gig ticket.”
Justin Timberlake along with Daft Punk and Flo Rida also saw high numbers on the list, breaking the top five while Eminem, Pitbull, Drake, Jay Z, and Kanye West also reached the millions in illegal downloads.
