Mo’Nique is back on the acting scene since her Oscar winning performance in Precious. The talk show host will star in the indie movie adaptation of the Larry Duplechan novel Blackbird. She also serves as executive producer alongside her husband Sidney Hicks through his company Hicks Media.

The movie follows Randy Rousseau–played by new actor Julian Walker–a 17-year-old choir boy from a small town in Mississippi in this coming-of-age story. Randy is a maverick in his high school and soon identifies as gay, something that doesn’t resonate well with his religious family and conservative community. To further complicate his current situation, his younger sister goes missing and his parents (played by Mo’Nique and Isaiah Washington) split up, in which his mother blames his lifestyle for both events.

Blackbird is a film about the choices people are forced to make as they struggle to figure out how to be themselves, ” Sydney said in a statement regarding the film. “Since Mo’Nique won the Oscar, we have received numerous scripts, but nothing captured our attention until Isaiah [Washington], who we have a high level of respect for, sent us ‘Blackbird.’ We became instant fans of Patrik-Ian Polk and knew we had to get behind this important film.”

Former Danity Kane star D. Woods, Kevin Allesee, Torrey Laamar, Nikki Jane, Terrell Tilford, and Gary L. Gary will also star in this Patrik-Ian Polk-directed movie.
