2013 was not a good year (professionally) for Lady Gaga. Her highly anticipated ARTPOP LP was a mere blimp on the Billboard charts with just $258,000 copies sold in its first week; a far cry from Born This Way, which hit the one-million mark in the same amount of time just two years ago.
“Applause” remains the only single with a video while the fate of “Do What U Want” hangs in the gallows. This past weekend, the Versace spokesperson addressed the video delay on her Little Monsters fan site where she placed blame on money hungry investors.
“Those who have betrayed me gravely mismanaged my time and health and left me on my own to damage control any problems that ensued as a result,” she lamented. “Millions of dollars are not enough for some people. They want billions. Then they need trillions. I was not enough for some people. They wanted more.”
In addition to having only a week to shoot, Gaga stresses that her past videos were a result of creative control and time to brainstorm ideas. “It is very devastating for someone like me, I devote every moment of my life to creating fantasies for you.”
“Do What U Want” has been shrouded in controversy since its release. Gaga and guest R. Kelly have pushed the envelope multiple times with what some people call hyper-sexualized live performances. Photographer Terry Richardson, who shot the highly anticipated visuals, recently shared a photo of Gaga straddling Kelly on set.
