It’s a sad day for South Africa as Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95. South African President Jacob Zuma who has been serving as the family spokesperson on the nature of the political activist confirmed his death.
The iconic leader had been in and out of the hospital with his latest stay in June of this year battling lung infection. The leader had been suffering from lung problems since he first got infected with tuberculosis at his country’s Robben Island prison where he stayed for 27 years.
Mandela is notably known for his pivotal role as an anti-apartheid fighter and aid in breaking the country’s racial discrimination. After his fight succeeded, he became the first democratically elected president. His biographical movie, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, is currently playing in theaters.
We are very sadden by this news and we send our condolences to his family, friends, and all those grieving around the world.
