The Human Rights Foundation is lashing out at Mariah Carey for her recent performance at a gala for the Angolan Red Cross on Sunday (Dec. 15), where she was reportedly paid a whooping $1 million.

The daughter of Angola’s President, José Eduardo dos Santos, owns the mobile phone company Unitel that sponsored the event, sparking backlash from the human rights group for being associated with the “notoriously corrupt” dictator, THR reports.

“Mariah Carey can’t seem to get enough dictator cash, reportedly more than $1 million this time,” HRF president Thor Halvorssen said in a statement. “Just five years ago she performed for the family of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Now, she goes from private performances to public displays of support and credibility for one of Africa’s chief human rights violators and most corrupt tyrants. It is the sad spectacle of an international artist purchased by a ruthless police state to entertain and whitewash the father-daughter kleptocracy that has amassed billions in ill-gotten wealth while the majority of Angola lives on less than $2 a day.”

The Shepherd of the Lambily isn’t the only music star to come under fire for her overseas endeavors. The HRF has also slammed Jennifer Lopez and Kanye West for their appearances abroad.
