Joan Smalls Covers Elle, Discusses The Lack of Diversity “There Are People in the Industry Who Are Advocates, Who Support Diversity. And There Are People Who Do Not”

Joan Smalls on Elle

Joan Smalls landed her first Elle cover and predictably not her last. Dressed in a Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci sequined dress, Smalls uses her new glossy spread to voice her opinion on lots of things, mainly the lack of pigment in her particular field.

“People hide behind the word aesthetic. They say, ‘Well it’s just that designer’s aesthetic.’ But when you see 18 seasons in a row and not one single model outside a certain skin color…?,” the model told the mag’s writer Molly Young. “There are people in the industry who are advocates who support diversity. And there are people who do not. I don’t get it. Beauty is universal. Theres doors have to open.”

Hopefully her recent claims on the lack of variety within the fashion industry transcend to other magazines, and prompts them to make major changes. The full story drops December 17th but flip the page to see more from her spread.
