Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, is now a free man. After being convicted for the death of the pop icon, Dr. Murray was released Monday (Oct. 28) from prison after serving two years of a four-year sentence, the Associated Press reports.

According to the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office, a change in a California law allowed him an early release. The former cardiologist, 60, was convicted in 2011 of providing Jackson an overdose of the powerful drug propofol as a sleep aid that reportedly caused MJ’s untimely death.

Prior to serving as Jackson’s personal physician as the singer was about to head out on tour, Murray’s license to practice medicine was suspended or revoked in three states. He is said to be appealing the conviction for Jackson’s death.

“Dr. Murray has not received any special treatment in jail and in fact has many less privileges than most inmates because of his notoriety,” his attorney Valerie Wass said in a statement earlier this year. “[He] is very much looking forward to his release and getting on with his life. However, the fact of his incarceration is increasingly difficult for him.”
