When it comes to female tennis, can anyone top Serena Williams? That’s what everyone’s thinking since the Compton native snagged her fifth U.S. Open title and 17th Grand Slam singles title yesterday (Sept. 8). The 31-year old also became the oldest Open Era winner after narrowly beating Victoria Azarenka.
“Victoria is such a great competitor. She was really able to push me into a third set. I was really stern with myself. I knew that if I wanted to win, I had to play better,” she dished after her victory.
Serena’s big win also includes a $2.6 million check and $1 million bonus.
