Black women have taken pride in embracing their natural roots for years. On Saturday (September 14) Hairfinity hosted the largest natural hair care event to hit New York City at the Let Your Hair Down Expo. Fashion pioneers, Jenell Stewart (founder of KinkyCurlyoilyMe!) and Christina S. Brown (creator of LoveBrownSugar.com) partnered up to feature an evening of hair, health, art and conversation.
The affair brought together savvy naturalists, stylists, bloggers and over 3,000 women to convene at SIR Stage 37 located in Manhattan’s midtown. A budding opportunity for small businesses, vendors were able to showcase their products and designs, which varied from body jewelry (amazing body pieces from Candid Art Accessories) to custom apparel lines. Natural hair comedian, Kim Coles, and lifestyle/natural hair vlogger, Taren Guy, were amongst the celebrity fashionistas to come out and support.
“This event is about more than hair. It’s about giving people a chance to be a part of the economy. This is a field dominated by natural hair product lines created by African-American women, and we are now finding that larger brands are jumping on the bandwagon to attract this growing and devoted community. Black women are now coveted consumers,” says Candace Kelley, creator of Let Your Hair Down EXPO.
