Do you have any advice for woman trying to be at the top of a male-dominated field?
Know your craft very well. Unfortunately women expect more from us than men. If you want to be on top of your game, know your craft and know you’re skill, be very confident. It’s important that we are aware of the power we have, and to continue to be the example for other women coming behind us.
What are your thoughts on David Oliver, he just ran the fastest time this year in the 110 meter hurdle race.
David Oliver’s a great guy. In 2011 he had a great season but he got injured in 2012 so for him to be able to come back and win this title [is great]!
How’s your relationship with Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce?
Shelly Ann is one of my favorite Jamaican sprinters. Not only is she phenomenally talented but also she’s very humble and I just love that. She’s an Olympic and world champion. She’s one of the most decorated sprinters of our generation. She’s a great girl and I’m really happy for her. I wish I could be there myself this year, but I’ll be back.
Are you fully recovered?
I’m going to have surgery [again] next week on my big toe. I ended up with a stress fracture after trying to run on it. So the doctors want to go in and do something else to try and alleviate some of the pressure. I’m prayerful it’ll work and I’ll be back. I’ll have one more surgery and God willing I’ll have two months of recovery.
How did you get into fashion?
As a female athlete that plays for a long time, I guess they expect you to be a tomboy and it’s not cool to be too girly. I remember in college, I was like “why can’t I do my hair, everybody out here looks dead” so I just started to wear more make up. People started to compliment me. People want to embrace their womanhood and feel pretty, so I wanted young girls to know you can do both. After college I got more into fashion and beauty and I love it.
Who are some of your favorite designers?
Besides Louis [Vuitton] and Gucci, Chanel is one of my favorites. I wore [Chanel] earrings it in the Olympics. But I love BCBG, Rebecca Minkoff, TopShop, and I shop a lot in Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.
Are there any fashion trends you wish would go away?
One thing I never got into was overalls, that can go. Anything else I’ll try but not overalls [laughs].
Can we expect a clothing line from you soon?
That would be everything. I think people think I’ll come out with a sports line but that’s not what I want to do. I want to do something fashionable and trendy. We’ll see what happens because that would be amazing.
