The verdict is still out on Beyoncé’s pixie cut, but it seems the “spontaneous” style change was in the making for some time. Her hair colorist, Rita Hazan, tells Us Weekly that the megastar, known for her over the top tresses, wanted to be more of an example to her female fans. Not only is the new do real, it’s a reflection of King Bey’s take charge style.

“I think she was just feeling empowered, like a strong woman, and she said she’s been feeling it for a long time. She didn’t want to hide behind her hair in real life,” she says.

“I’m so happy because the extensions give women the wrong expectation of what their hair should look like — it’s great for onstage, but everyday women shouldn’t have or want to have five pounds of hair on their head. This hair is more natural, more realistic.”

Hazan also reveals that creating a color for Bey took quite some time since they wanted to stay true to her natural hair color. Done over the course of four hours, Hazan created a “champagne blonde”, similar to Marilyn Monroe.

“This shade shows women of every color that they can wear this shade. Just make sure that it’s healthy- healthy hairwill keep the color longer. My personal thought is that every woman can be blonde as long as it’s the right shade of blonde for your skin color. And Beyonce pulls it off!”
