In April of this year I attend a media event for the launch of Mirrors Hair salon, the new natural hair shop at Carol’s Daughter, and it changed my life. I was six weeks into my March relaxer, so I was slightly over due for my fix. I attended the event with hesitation. What will they do to my new growth? Can they manage my very curly hair? Much to my surprise, they straightened my hair and told me to never get relaxers again. After a bit more coaxing, I was sold and I was ready to begin my transition.
The next month I made an appointment at a braiding shop in Harlem—if I was going to start my journey what better way than kick it off with a protective style? I kept them in for a little over a month and on June 28 I took out my braids with almost four months of new growth. If you’ve ever started a natural hair transition, you know the biggest thing you deal with is breakage. After combing through my hair, my sink was filled with knots. Hair was everywhere and I looked a hot mess. I headed back to Carol’s Daughter and Jasmine Scott literally saved me. She washed and conditioned my hair with their steam treatment and blew out my hair to give me the straighter look that I love.
