Scotty RebelGail Scott is more than just a bite-sized beauty from the Bronx. Her tale is vast and involves plenty of heartbreak, but her endurance has proved to be invaluable. On a Summer evening, in the cellar of a Bronx co-op, Scott is surrounded by her friends, family, rowdy neighbors and a group of production people—hired to direct her every move.

The cameras don’t bother her. She’s living her dream—shooting her first music video in her playground and she wouldn’t have it any other way. We caught up with the “Bang’n” songstress to find out exactly who is this girl nicknamed Scotty Rebel. — Christopher Harris

VIBE Vixen: How has your upbringing shaped who you are as an artist?
Scotty Rebel: I grew up pretty fast. When I was eight my Dad used to play guitar and piano, I was like how can I do this? He told me to just sing from your heart and put 110% into everything that you do and never let anybody tell me I wasn’t good enough.

I started off with Lloyd and Matty B, then I went to Grand Hustle and nobody paid me any attention. Then I got signed to Motown back in 2010, it’s been a long journey. It took a lot of growing, a lot of changing. It changed me as a person too. I wasn’t sure about myself back then. I feel like this is my time now.

Now, you’re shooting your first music video for “Bang” in your hometown of the Bronx. How does it feel?
It feels good because I couldn’t have it any other way, this is my playground.
