Kendrick Lamar captivated the music world with his debut and now the industry is rewarding him. On Thursday, June 27, the good kid, m.A.A.d city rapper will receive the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ (ASCAP) Vanguard Award. This top honor recognizes the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of music. Previous Vanguard recipients include Janelle Monae, Beastie Boys, Diplo and Santigold.
“Kendrick Lamar’s smart, structured story-telling and genre-bending sound make him stand out amongst his peers. He pushes boundaries with his creativity, perfectly illustrating everything that the ASCAP Vanguard Award recognizes,” says ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams.
ASCAP VP of Membership Nicole George-Middleton also calls the Top Dawg emcee “one of the most exciting acts in the rap game today” with “big things…in store for his career.”
The invitation only Rhythm & Soul Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles’ swanky Beverly Hilton Hotel.
