This is the year of the biopics.
The story of Lorraine Hansberry–famed author, first black playwright and youngest American to win a NY Critics Circle award–is in development, and actress Issa Rae is slated to play Hansberry’s close friend Nina Simone.
The movie is a collaboration between scriptwriter Numa Perrier, while Hansberry’s grand niece Taye, who will star in the title role. Jaleel White is slated to play James Baldwin.
The project is heading into pre-production and expected to begin filming in the fall.
