Howard University: ‘Hip-Hop’s Favorite University’ Keeps The People Talking

Howard University

Howard University must have fine print that comes along with the acceptance letter: “When you go to a school so elite, haters — those who secretly want to know what the hype is all about – shall follow.”

We manage to be hip-hop’s favorite school because we’ve mastered the balance between being studious and partying, without a hair out of place or a wrinkle in a suit. Should we apologize that Drake wants to go to our school, Wale frequents our Yard, and Diddy endorses his honorary alma mater? No? Then maybe we should apologize because our alum have changed history while our attendees make history.

The same people who despise my school buy tickets to our homecoming festivities and pledge one of the five Divine Nine sororities and fraternities founded on Howard’s campus, while swooning over previous graduates like Lance Gross, Taraji P. Henson, and Phylicia Rashad (the most stylish mother in TV history), just to name a few. And thanks to Claire Huxtable, the women of HU may walk across the grass, but when we do, it’s in 4-inch heels with not one grass stain once we get to the other side. Because why take the long way when the smartest way is also the quickest.

Bison aren’t concerned with popularity; only on being great. While other schools are wondering what’s our mojo, we’re busy being entrepreneurs, scholars and worldly women and men copping degrees. I can talk for hours about Assata Shakur (Common taught me) and Steve Biko (thanks to A Tribe Called Quest), but I’m also no stranger the New Orleans slave revolt–one of the largest in American History–or the correlation between jail beds and 3rd grade test scores.

Don’t let our “hip-hop” status overshadow our academics. As much as my alma mater educates me on my history, my major and myself, so does the hip-hop community because not all of it is ass shaking and gun slinging. We can’t help it if your favorite rapper raps about our school. Like Spelman, being “Hip Hop’s Favorite University” isn’t on our “to-achieve” list, but we achieved it anyway; one of the many things we achieve without trying.
