It may be the 21st century, but racism is still alive and well.
Cheerios, the cereal brand known for its heartwarming advertisements, is under fire for depicting an interracial family on television. In its newest commercial, an adorable biracial girl asks her white mother if Cheerios is really good for the heart. When the mother replies “yes,” the girl pours the entire box on her dad’s chest, igniting a collective “aww” from viewers.
Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a positive depiction of family was tarnished by hateful YouTube comments.
According to AdWeek, most of the comments make reference to Nazis and racial genocide and have forced the company to disable the comments section. “Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad,” said Cheerios Vice President of Marketing Camille Gibson. “At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”
Since the unfortunate response, supporters have flooded the Cheerios Facebook page to show their support. Watch the commercial (above) and let us know what you think.
