Bert and Ernie may be Sesame Street‘s most beloved duo, but The New Yorker takes their friendship to a whole other level with their most recent cover. Sitting in front of a 1950′s style television in a close embrace, the iconic characters are depicted as a gay couple celebrating the end of the DOMA  Act and California’s Proposition 8.

The now iconic image was originally submitted to a Tumblr by artist Jack Hunter who is happy to see it receive national recognition.

“It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime. This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate,” he recently told the New Yorker Culture Desk.

For years, Sesame Street has claimed that Bert and Ernie have no sexual orientation, making this image both scandalous and pretty darn cute.
