Did you miss Basketball Wives? In case you were craving more of the drama, leading stars Shaunie O’Neal, Evelyn Lozada and Tami Roman of the hit VH1 show grace the cover of Upscale magazine‘s June/July issue to reveal preparation for a fifth season, why two cast members were voted off and how they coped with negativity surrounding the show.
As fights and arguments came to a head last season, O’Neal, an executive producer for the TV spot, reached her limit. “[It] was so difficult to deal with when it was airing and when it was all over with,” she told the mag. “I remember saying, ‘What the hell just happened? This isn’t us; we’re mothers, we’re businesswomen. We have to be smarter. We have to represent ourselves a lot better.’”
She later added, “By the time we did the [season four] reunion we all agreed enough is enough. We had a group talk and were all definitely on the same page. We heard the messages loud and clear. We knew we had to do better. It was an eye opener.
Evelyn, who bore the brunt of negative backlash, claims her on-air representation spilled over into the public’s opinion of her home life with ex-husband Chad Johnson. “People were connecting my behavior on the show with the incident with Chad. They were like, ‘Well if she acts like that on the show, then I’m sure she acts like that at home.’ I’m a totally different person at home.”
Although Shaunie and Evelyn were throttled in the public eye, Tami battled weight issues privately but later resurfaced a slim and fit advocate for health.
So what’s in the forthcoming chapter for the reality TV queens? Not former cast mates Jennifer Williams and Royce Reed.
“It was a chemistry thing,” Shaunie says. “It just became awkward to film or even come up with a conversation. It just wasn’t working for TV.”
Look forward to catching up with VH1′s Big Three for the season premiere set to air in August.
