Unfortunately, it looks like even a Nicki Minaj-Mariah Carey beef couldn’t boost American Idol ratings. According to multiple reports, execs will not be asking Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj to return next season. With ratings down 25% from last year, they are hoping that a makeover (and less controversy) will bring the reality show back to its former glory.
“All four are gone. They feel they’ve lost their core audience and they want it back. No more big checks for divas,” and insider tells The Wrap.
Veteran judge Randy Jackson confirmed some of the rumor when he announced his departure yesterday (May 9).
“Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to the rest, after 12 years of judging on ‘American Idol’ I have decided it is time to leave after this season. I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry. It’s been a life changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures.”
Here’s to hoping the American Idol brand can be saved.
