Brittney Griner Phoenix Mercury No. 1 Draft PickBrittney Griner is ready to move past her stellar college career and embark on another career in professional basketball.

With the no. 1 pick of the 2013 WNBA draft, the Phoenix Mercury chose Griner over Notre Dame’s stand-out and Lil Wayne crush Skylar Diggins, who went third to the Tulsa Shock.

Griner–who at times while on the hardwood seemed unflappable–was a little on edge while at the draft. “It’s a dream come true. I’m like a little kid in Disney World the first time meeting all the characters. Sitting at the table they said 15 seconds and my heart started beating so fast. I was grabbing the tablecloth underneath,” Griner said in an interview with The Grio.

The 6-foot-8 baller leaves Baylor as second all-time in NCAA history with 3,283 points. She is the top shot-blocker ever, demolishing both the men’s and women’s college records with 748 blocks, and holds a record 18 dunks with an astounding 11 this season.

The Mercury are looking to rebound from a disappointing season that ended with the franchise having the second-worst record in the WNBA. The lack of wins worked in the Mercury’s favor and for the 3rd time, they were able to get the number one pick. The pick-up for the Mercury has everyone from the city of Phoenix to management picturing a brighter future for the franchise. “We have a team of All-Stars already,” Phoenix Mercury president Amber Cox said. “To add her to the mix solidifies us for a long time. When Phoenix comes to town it will be must-see basketball.” -- D.J. Larsen
