VIBE Vixen: What interests you the most about doing the Perfect Harmony program?
Carly Rae Jepsen: When they first brought up the idea of doing a collaboration where I would play the song and there would be three different versions of it that would be played on American Idol, I saw it as an awesome challenge. I actually was in the Bahamas at the time, and I spent three days cooped up in my hotel room just racking up ideas. It’s going to be very interesting to see which one gets picked. I have my favorite one, but I’m excited to see what the fans want.
Do you feel closer to your fans because of this opportunity?
Yeah. You get an opportunity to write a song with people who support you and keep your career alive. And it’s not just the song lyrics but the whole performance is mapped out. They can pick my dancer’s outfits and the set. It’s going to be really, really cool.
Seems like it’s going to be so involved. Do you think fans will be overwhelmed with the options?
I don’t know. I think it’s sort of fun when you get to control somebody else. I created three different endings that I love, and it’ll be interesting to see what the fans and supporters are thinking is the best and fitting for this performance. I’m kind of fascinated to see what they decide.
What parts of the process are you most excited to see: the costumes, music or designs?
I think the one I have my heart set on the most is the lyrics. I’m a very opinionated woman, but either way it’s just going to be really exciting for me to perform that night. I never thought I would be performing on American idol.
Lastly, how do you feel this opportunity will inspire your fans?
Let them know songwriting really isn’t that unreasonable, and if it’s something that you’re interested in, you should definitely try your hand at it.
