Ma'lik Richmond Steubenville Ohio rape guiltyOn Sunday (Mar. 17), Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma’Lik Richmond (pictured) were found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl and sentenced to at least a year in juvenile jail, according to Yahoo! News.

Last August, football players Mays, 17, and Richmond, 16, digitally penetrated the drunken young girl–who believed she had been drugged–after a party. The nonconsensual activity first took place in the backseat of a car then in the basement of a house.

“It was really scary,” she testified on Saturday (Mar. 16). “I honestly did not know what to think because I could not remember anything.”

The teenage girl could not recall exact details about the evening but remembers leaving the party hand-in-hand with Mays and waking up to discover that her phone, earrings, shoes and underwear were missing. She realized she was assaulted when she watched morning-after video and text messages that poked fun at the alleged attack.

As the verdict was read this morning, Mays and Richmond were visibly upset as the verdict came down. Through sobs, both boys apologized to the victim and her family.

The case, which opened last week, has sent the community spiraling, shedding light on cover-ups of the small town’s athletes.

Judge Thomas Lipps said that all teenagers involved can ”change their lives for the better.”
