If there’s one thing some men’s magazines are guilty of, it’s promoting an unrealistic image of women. We’re sometimes force fed messages that say we should be stick-like thin, have long, flowing hair and large “assets.” So, while it’s no surprise that the editor of a men’s magazine admits to doing this, it still stings.
On Tuesday (Mar. 19), Esquire editor Alex Blimes sat on a panel with women to discuss feminism in media and advertising at the Advertising Week Europe Conference in London. While discussing the role of women in the magazine’s pages, he compared us to inanimate objects used for men’s enjoyment.
“We use pretty girls in the same way we provide pictures of cool cars,” he said. “I could lie to you if you want and say we are interested in their brains as well. We are not. They are objectified. Men see women in 3D in many different roles in life, but at certain times, we like to see them sexy.”
While Blimes also points out that Esquire is far more “ethnically” and “shape” diverse compared to other glossies, it’s still disheartening to know that the ideas behind such a popular publication are only skin deep.
