UPDATE [2:33pm EST]: It looks like The Onion has come to its senses. Hours after crawling into a cyber-hole for calling Quvenzhané Wallis the c-word, the satirical site issued the below apology:
“On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars… We are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible. Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.”
There’s a thin line between satire and ignorance and The Onion just crossed it. During what was supposed to be comical commentary on The Academy Awards, the farcical website posted the below tweet about pint-sized cutie and Best Actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis:
Unfortunately, the disgusting comment was favorited by more than 400 Twitter users and stayed online for an hour before being deleted. The Onion has yet to address the tweet with a public apology. Between this and several news reporters haughtily mispronouncing Quvenzhané’s name, we think the media should and can do a lot better.
Thankfully, it looks like the Beasts of the Southern Wild actress had a fantastic night. There’s even hopes that she be at the A-list event again, following her role in Annie!
