Black History Month Woman of the Day: Madam C.J. Walker

Madam CJ WalkerHair care for African Americans has always been constantly evolving. Sarah Breedlove better known as Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919) made it easier to maintain black hair and growth with her invention of hair care products.

Using her entrepreneur and philanthropist skills, she  developed her own shampoo and an sulfur ointment to make scalps healthier for hair growth. She also taught women business savvy tips to start their own businesses.

Her success made her the first female self made millionaire in America. Since her death in 1919 due to hypertension, she has been inducted into numerous halls of fames including he Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and the Women’s Hall of Fame. Her popularity is so untimely that the Guinness Book of Records named her as the first woman to become a millionaire by her own achievements.
