Nine year-old Quvenzhané Wallis is the youngest Oscar nominee ever and some are still figuring out exactly who the little, charismatic child is. Nominated for Best Actress for her role in Beasts of The Southern Wild, the miniature-sized star isn’t like many other Best Actress nominees from past Academy Awards ceremonies. Here are seven things you need to know about the pint-sized thespian. -Sandra Garcia

  1. Quvenzhané could not read when she auditioned for Beasts of the Southern Wild.
  2. The auditions for Beasts were for children ages 6 to 9, so Quvenzhane, who was only 5 years old at the time, had to lie about her age to audition.
  3. The young actress almost didn’t watch her big nomination. “I almost missed it. I was sleeping,” she said.
  4. She uses her iPhone to help her remember acceptance speeches. When she won the Critics’ Choice Award she used her phone to read her speech which said “Thanks to Mr Benh Zeitlin and the Court 13 family for thinking I could make a good Hushpuppy.” She also didn’t forget those close to her. “Last to my family, friends, and fans. Good night.”
  5. She chose the actor that plays her dad in the film, who happens to be a baker, based on the fact that he brought her sweets.
  6. She calls the Oscar Award the “golden man.”
  7. Quvenzhane has never taken an acting class before. Unlike many other child actors her age, the precocious tot doesn’t have a mom-ager either.
