When you hear the phrase “designer collaboration,” I’m sure the thought of Playboy would never come to mind. But the men’s magazine known for featuring racy photographs of nude women is now trying to change that image by kicking off a series of partnerships with some acclaimed, high-end designers.
With a 50 Shades of Grey-inspired design, the Playboy powerhouse’s first creation will be a leather harness-inspired bra by the edgy duo Cushnie et Ochs. And, although the designers don’t seem like the most natural fit for a risqué team-up, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs told WWD that they were interested in the “quintessential” brand and are excited by the prestigious fashion players the magazine is working with.
“Playboy is such a quintessential brand. They told us where they’re heading and the sort of people they had been working with, like Jenne Lombardo and Neville Wakefield, and we thought we could do something really cool and edgy and special.”
The popular designers are hosted a pop-up lounge at the Playboy A$AP concert during the Art Basel Miami. The leather bra, which will retail for $695 on Playboy‘s website, will be modeled by the playmates during the party.
It’s interesting to see such collaboration and even more to see the type of clientele that Playboy will be drawing to their product. I wonder if contacting “Munch,” the kink and alternative sexualities club over at Harvard, came to mind. Now that would be interesting. -Vicki Valery
