The criticism surrounding the casting of Zoe Saldana as jazz great Nina Simone continues. Change.org has issued a petition to have the Afro-Latina actress replaced in Simone’s forthcoming biopic by someone who actually looks like the late star. Fans and critics view Saldana’s transformation into Simone as offensive since photos from the set show Zoe with an afro, darkened skin and a prosthetic nose.
In a NYT interview, Simone’s daughter disagreed with the casting of the Columbiana actress stating, “My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise this is not the best choice.”
The Change.org petition currently has over 9,000 signatures and asks for executive producer Jimmy Iovine and director Cynthia Mort to replace Saldana.
Do you think African Americans are going too far with a petition to have Zoe removed from the film?
