Being Mary Jane

Last week, Vixen was granted the opportunity to get attend the premiere screening of Being Mary Jane during the Urbanworld Film Festival. The BET production, written and produced by Mara Brock and Salim Akil, was an hour-long snippet of what will become, what we hope, a long-running TV series.

Mary Jane, played by award-winning actress Gabrielle Union, is a 30-something-year-old single Black career woman, balancing being the bread winner of her family, the woes of dating and upholding responsibility to the Black community as a TV journalist. The film was witty, funny and, often times, a harsh mirror for many modern-day independent women. Most importantly, this piece started a conversation.
