According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Avatar actress shall play Nina with David Oyelowo starring as her manager, Clifton Henderson.
Simone, who passed away in 2003, was known for her singing and songwriting talents as much as her activism in the civil rights movement during the 1960s. The biopic is based on Simone’s 1992 autobiography I Put A Spell On You.
Though Mary J. Blige was initially set to play Simone, the R&B diva moved on to other projects due to funding issues. Production for the Cynthia Mort-directed movie is set to start in Los Angeles October 16.
